COUNTER REVOLUTIONARY HANDBOOK
PART II: SECONDARY ORGANIZATIONS
I. IDENTIFYING DATA
Common Title: PRC (A)
Title: Partido Revolucionario Cubana (Autentico)
Cuban Revolutionary Party (Autentico)
Name borne by various splinter groups of respected middle-of-the-road
political party successively led by Ramon GRAU San Martin, [Carlos]
PRIO Socarras, and Antonio DE VARONA. All splinters cling to
original liberal anti-communist, anti-socialist, free enterprise
orientation of the party. Two identifiable factions in
exile. (1) PRC (A) in Miami aka PRC in Exile (PRCE), led by
Lomberto de la Caridad DIAZ y Rodriguez and Ruben MENDIOLA Arana, which
claims to have turned against Castro as early as September, 1958 and
never to have participated in Castro government; opposes CRC; claims
contacts with Autentico underground; separated from PRIO early 1959
when latter continued to cooperate with CASTRO; (2) PRC (A) in New
York, headed by Carlos Manuel TORRES, which still maintains contact
with PRIO and provides a base for his contacts with Rep. Victor L.
Anfuso. PRIO continues to entertain hopes of unifying all
factions under his personality, having discussed unification in summer
1962 with VARONA (who led many old Autentico members into
"Rescate" in 1960, possibley [possibly] in hopes "Rescate" would become
PRC action organization similar to old Organizacion Autentico (OA)),
with MENDIOLA; and with Eusebio MUJAL (early Autentico labor leader
later allied with Batista, and now CTC chief in exile). Feliz
LANCIS y Sanchez, titular head inside Cuba, is in prison.
II. HISTORY
As political party, dates back to 1933. Opposed Batista
consistently. Set up clandestine Organizacion Autentico (OA) as
action arm to fight Batista and Castro, successively. PRIO (for
OA) and VARONA (for PRC both signed Castro's 1958 Caracas Pact.
Autenticos, with long history of anti-communism, were among first
political exiles after holding various high offices in initial months
of Castro, Miami faction organized November 1960; New York faction,
June 1961. PRIO, accompanied by his secretary (Orlando
PUENTE Perez) has worked more as individual than as PRC
functionary. Considerable guerrilla and sabotage has been
attributed to "Autentico", but difficult to distinguish among PRC, OA
and "Rescate" activities.
III. CURRENT STATUS
Miami faction claims 1,200 members; thus appears to be most nearly
legitimate heir to PRC (A) title. Claims of contact with
underground must be discounted, since no visible assets or means of
support. All factions function more like political parties than
clandestine organizations.
