I. IDENTIFYING DATA:

Title:   Movimiento Democratico Martiano
             Marti Democratic Movement (also Frente Democratico Martiano)

Integral member of Unidad Revolucionaria (UR).  Basic principles not available, but adhere to those of U. R., q. v.  In favor of the principles of Jose Marti which form the basis of a republican system of government for Cuba.

S.:  Oscar Juan DUARTE Gil; Manuel CALVO; Tomas ARENCIBIA; Tomas PRIETO Raton; Reynaldo GUILLEN Linas; Manolo NOVAL; Manolo BARREIRA; Jesus GUERRA Somelillan; Jose GONZALEZ Hernandez; Sonia RODRIGUEZ del Rey; Victor PANEQUE;  Ramon GONZALEZ; Rafael LUBIAN Arias; Enrique L. SANCHEZ Portillo;  In Cuba: Manolito ARIAS; Capt. Bernardo CORRALES, executed Jan 62; Raul BARROS Rodriguez, arrested.

II.  HISTORY

Organized in Havana, May 1959 by anti-Castro elements which included former members of pre-Revolutionary armed forces.  Founded by Ramon GONZALEZ, who fled Cuba and was replaced by Capt. Bernardo CORRALES, captured and executed in January 1962.  A Rebel Army Capt. named BERMUDEZ, who "rose in rebellion" with the MDM, "denounced" most of the leadership and many members of MDM. Following Playa Giron, MDM was disorganized by arrests and executions, but claims its movement still exists and operates in Cuba today.

III.  CURRENT STATUS

Current Natl. Coord. Of MDM in Cuba is Manolito ARIAS.  In April 1962 DUARTE, Coord. for Security in Havana for MDM and FOAC, arrived in the U. S. to obtain military material for resistance elements inside.  He stated MDM is currently active inside, that it has some weapons, assists families of imprisoned members, collects intelligence on members of G-2 and Soviet troop and ship movements.  DUARTE now General Coordinator in exile.
