I. IDENTIFYING DATA:

Common Title:  Montecristi

Title:     Agrupacion Montecristi (AM)
              Montecristi Group

Political:  Leftist oriented.  Basic principles parallel those of CRC except Montecristi believes in more radical agrarian reform.  Was once part of FRD; is a member of the CRC; is affiliated with Asamblea Representativa de la Union Libertadora (A. R. U. L.)

Leading Personalities:  Justo CARRILLO Hernandez, founder and General Coordinator until Sept. 1962 (resigned to work with Alliance for Progress); Francisco CARRILLO Masvidal; Marcos A. HIRIGOYEN; Angel del Cerro; Guadencio CASTRO; Captain Leslie NOBREGAS Heria; Dr. Rafael Eric AGUERO; Dr. Andres SUAREZ; Eduardo MAYEA Aroca; Jose M. SANCHEZ Navarro.

II.  HISTORY

Originally composed of professional people including lawyers, members of medical profession and bankers.  First Activity noted:  unsuccessful 1956 anti-Batista coup-d'etat led by Justo CARRILLO and Col. Ramon BARQUIN.  Allied with Castro in Caracas Pact of 1958.  Members held important government jobs in early Castro days but resigned or were relieved over Communism issue.  In January 1960, Justo CARRILLO came to U. S. Until November 1961, engaged in transporting ammunition, arms and other materials to Cuba by boat.  Since then involved principally in anti-communist propaganda activity.  During early 1961 Montecristi in Cuba was headed by "TITO" HERMINDA until his arrest in April.   Group functioned well until Playa Giron, at which time some arrested, some went into hiding while others were jailed or executed.

III.  CURRENT STATUS

Estimated membership in the U. S. is 700 of which 500-600 are in the Miami area; in other Latin American countries about 200 with a maximum of 200 inside Cuba.  In April 1962 AM participated in DRE TV intrusion operation in Havana area involving the PT boat, SUSAN ANN.  In August 1962, 4 members of the AM (led by Captain NOBREGAS) assisted 16 DRE individuals in the raid on the Hotel "Rosita de Horneda," Havana.  Has received monthly financial support from CRC since September 1961.  Has three boats.  Justo CARRILLO and other individuals now are interested in Manolo RAY's new JURE, but AM not participating as organization.
