PART II:  SECONDARY ORGANIZATIONS

I. IDENTIFYING DATA:

Common Title:  AAA, Triple A

Title:   Asociacion de Amigos Aureliano
          Association of Friends of Aureliano

Predecessor of Frente Nacional Democratica Triple A (FNDTA), q. v., but organization still commonly called AAA or Triple A inside Cuba.  As name implies, built completely around Aureliano SANCHEZ Arango.  Principles best described in light his deeds:  Essentially leftist-oriented clandestine fighter and part-time politician since 1922.  Admits short-term Communist affiliation in early 30's.  Joined Autentico Party and became PRIO's Minister of Education 1948-52.  Broke with PRIO 1955.  Member Caribbean Legion, mounted land and sea clandestine ops against Batista.  Began dealing with Castro pre-1955, but did not sign Caracas Pact of 1958.  Initially loyal to Castro, but at odds by early 1960, scheming with Romulo BETANCOURT  to overthrow Castro.  Exiled May 1960, and has pursued independent, autocratic revolutionary path since.

II.  HISTORY

Organized prior 1954 as SANCHEZ Arango's personal clandestine army.  Effective Batista opposition in sabotage, terrorism, invasions from outside Cuba.  Fought beside OA and 26 July Movement, but joined neither.  Supported Castro until early 1960.  After SANCHEZ Arango's exile, continued activist operations inside.  Joined FRD June 1960, but withdrew almost immediately in opposition to FRD and U. S. policies, and reportedly because SANCHEZ was defeated for FRD presidency by VARONA.

III. CURRENT STATUS

In exile, formally transformed into FNDTA, which SANCHEZ Arango personally commands; colloquially, "AAA" title still used.  Inside, remnants represented by individuals who claim "AAA" membership; contact with SANCHEZ Arango lost since October 1961.
