Staff - Publishing History
The purpose of the list of staff members is to show who was affiliated
with the newspaper and not intended to show position or job description.
The staff of the newspaper remained constant with some
exceptions. Staff listings on page one indicate those persons
listed on the staff at the date indicated and do not reflect a
continuing relationship. Once a person's name is mentioned there
is no differentiation of subsequent staff changes of either job
description or termination. Once a person is listed as being on
the staff his name is seldom deleted from the staff roll and seldom
listed in other than his initial position.
From September 1970 through December 1970 there were only two staff
members listed, those being Antonio Rojas and Aurea Poggio. (Masferrer
was not listed as a staff member possibly since he had been arrested in
September 1970 for jumping bond on a conviction for trying to invade
Haiti in January 1967, known as "Project Nassau"). He was in
hiding for some months before being arrested by the FBI, but his name
was not dropped from the staff listing until his arrest.
In December 1972 Rolando Masferrer was released on parole from the
Federal prison in Marion, Ill. He would not start a new series of
LIBERTAD newspapers until January 1974, but did write articles, almost
weekly, for PATRIA newspaper which did not bear his byline.
He also wrote for PUEBLO newspaper edited by Aurea Poggio who was on
the staff of LIBERTAD and also in the Haiti invasion force with
Masferrer in January 1967. She was murdered along with three
others in December 1980 in a Flagler Street duplex equipped to package
cocaine.
Rolando Masferrer used a number of "Pen-Names" two being "CRIXO" and
"ARCADIO PERALTA". (Arcadio was his middle name and Peralta was
the sir name of his ancestor who fought in the War of Independence.)

This series began publication with the first issue dated January 11
1969 año (year) I (one) and published continually through
December 18, 1970 with issue number 101 año II. The second
set of Libertad newspapers began in June 1974 with issue number

Rolando Masferrer was released from prison in December 1972 but it
wasn't until June 1974 that his second series of LIBERTAD began
publication. Since the numbering began with #101, it is assumed
that this series is a continuation from the 1969 publication.
(The numbering was, however, in error and should have begun with #102.)
On Friday 31 October 1975 he was killed by a bomb placed in or under
his car. The memorial issue is reflected in issue #172, 7
November 1975. His widow kept the newspaper going as long as she
could. The last issue of the newspaper was June 11, 1976 number
203. After this series there were two issues of LIBERTAD/2
magazine.

magazine was the "dream" of Rolando Masferrer so his widow and family
tried to fulfil that "dream". Possibly due to bad health on the
part of his widow Lucila, only two issues were published.
