UPDATE: CIB-96-15
DATE: February 26, 1996
DETECTIVE: L. Rodriguez

The following information has been received by this office:

Today, between 1:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m., the organization known as M.A.R. (Mothers Against Repression), which is led by Cuban exile leader Silvia Iriondo, and an assortment of other moderate Cuban exile organizations, will convene at the U.S. Federal Courthouse, located at 99 N.E. 4th Street, Miami, Florida, where they will demonstrate against the possible deportation of Cuban refugee Elizabeth Pis to Venezuela.

The U.S. Immigration and Naturalization service had planned to put Pis on a flight this morning to Venezuela, the country where she boarded a plane for Miami without documentation last year.  Yesterday, U.S. District Judge Shelby Highsmith stayed the deportation at least until 4:30 p.m., today, when he will hear arguments from Pis' lawyers, who are trying to get her released.

A crowd of 200 participants are expected to be in attendance at the U.S. Federal Courthouse throughout this demonstration.

In addition, Silvia Iriondo's group and several other Cuban exile organizations will host a symposium at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Downtown, Miami, in support of the Cuban-based umbrella organization known as Concilio Cubano.   This meeting will be held in order to show solidarity with those Cuba-based organizations that ratified their opposition against the Cuban government and requested to hold a national conference but were denied by Cuban government authorities.  As a result of their request for such conference, the Cuban government proceeded to arrest the leaders of Concilio Cubano and Cuban consulate officials in Washington, D.C. accused the United States of having orchestrated the entire affair.

Iriondo has revealed that the symposium at the Hyatt Regency will be held on Saturday, February 24, and Sunday, February 25, 1996.  The total number of participants is not known at this time.

Furthermore, Cuban radio commentator Thomas Garcia Fuste (WCMQ-1210) has hinted on the possibility of exhorting Cuban exiles to demonstrate against I.N.S. officials at the Krome Detention Center in the event that Elizabeth Pis is deported or returned to that location.  Plans for such demonstration are pending and would be revealed at a later time.

City of Miami Police officials and I.N.S. authorities have been appraised of the ongoing situation and will react accordingly.

The Criminal Intelligence Section will disseminated any new information expeditiously.
