The Instituto de Estudios Cubanos (IEC) (Institute of Cuban Studies), an organization comprised of university professors and other professionals, will be hosting its annual assembly on July 1,2, 1995, at the Hotel Vila located at 5959 S.W. 71st Street, Miami, Florida, 33143, (305) 667-6664. In addition, on June 30, 1995, Maria Cristina Herrera, IEC representative in South Florida, will host a cocktail party at her residence, located at 1545 Blue Road, Coral Gables.
In the past, several IEC members have been targeted by hard-line anti-Castro organizations due to their moderate to liberal views on the issue of U.S.-Cuba relations-i.e., in 1988 Maria Cristina Herrera's residence was bombed by unknown persons.
On June 19, 1995, Detective Luis Rodriguez and Amy Godoy met Maria Cristina Herrera at her residence and she revealed that several organization members have received various threats from members of several New Jersey based anti-Castro organizations. Miss Herrera has expressed her security concerns for the upcoming event and will update this office of any additional pertinent information.
