Los Zafiros Movie Protest

[MIAMI-DADE POLICE DEPARTMENT
  C.I.B. UPDATE 98-24, April 7, 1998]

CUBAN EXILE COMMUNITY AGAINST FILM "THE LIFE AND TIMES OF LOS ZAFIROS"

The following information was forwarded by the City of Miami Police Department Special Investigations Section (SIS):

SIS monitored the premiere screening of a controversial film based on the life and times of Los Zafiros, a prominent Cuban musical group of the 1960s.  The event was held at the Gusman Center, located at 174 East Flagler Street, Miami, Florida.

The film was produced by Cuban exile Hugo Cancio and was shot in Cuba in its entirety.  As such, the film has received negative reviews throughout a large segment of the Cuban exile community since it is viewed as Cuban government propaganda.

According to SIS representatives, security measures were heightened at the Guzman Center throughout the course of the event.  A similar event, held at the Guzman Center approximately two years ago, resulted in physical altercations between opposing Cuban exile groups.
