Symposium Cuban & Puerto Rican Struggle
[MIAMI-DADE POLICE DEPARTMENT. C.I.B. UPDATE 98-26. April 29, 1998]
EXILE SYMPOSIUM -
"THE STRUGGLE OF THE PUERTO RICAN AND CUBAN PEOPLE AGAINST US IMPERIALISM"
The Cuban exile liberal organizations known as ANTONIO MACEO BRIGADE,
MIAMI COALITION AGAINST THE EMBARGO and the ALLIANCE OF CUBAN WORKERS,
hosted a symposium on Saturday, May 2, 1998, at the Unitarian Church.
Among the guest speakers invited to participate in this event were
RAFAEL CANCEL MIRANDA, known for his support of Puerto Rican subversive
nationalist movements; ANDRES GOMEZ, leader of the ANTONIO MACEO
BRIGADE, and MARY-ALICE WATERS, publisher of such literary works as the
"Bolivian Diary of Ernesto "Che" Guevara". The theme of this activity
was "The Struggle Of The Puerto Rican And Cuban People Against U.S.
Imperialism".
As expected, members of the Cuban exile community denounced this latest
activity as an act of provocation and representatives of at least one
organization (UNIDAD CUBANA) vowed to counter-demonstrate at the site
during the course of the symposium.
According to ANDRES GOMEZ, at least 150 organization members and
invitees attended. According to statements by UNIDAD CUBANA
representatives, approximately 60-100 members par-took in the counter
demonstration.
Due to the recent changes in U.S. travel and freight forwarding
policies towards Cuba, a large segment of the Cuban exile community is
of the opinion that said new policies will lead to the lifting of the
U.S. embargo. As a result, counter-demonstrations at this or any
similar event may resort to direct confrontation with members of the
opposing organizations.
The CIS will remain in contact with leaders of the previously mentioned
groups and will disseminate any new information expeditiously.
