C.I.B. UPDATE 98-29
May 6, 1998

RALLY OF THE AD HOC COALITION TO FREE ANTONIO CAMACHO

ANTONIO CAMACHO requested a demonstration permit from the City of Miami Police Department for the purpose of carrying out a rally at the U.S. Federal Building located at SW 1 Street and SW 1 Avenue, on Thursday, May 7, 1998, between the hours of 5:00 p.m. and 6:15 p.m.

The listed coalition is made up of various leftist or liberal organizations such as THE ANTONIO MACEO BRIGADE, THE CUBAN EXILE WORKERS COALITION and THE COALITION AGAINST THE U.S. EMBARGO.

ANTONIO CAMACHO is a member of the Puerto Rican nationalist organization commonly known as the MACHETEROS.  CAMACHO has served ten years in prison as a result of his previous subversive activities and he is presently serving a seven year sentence for violation of probation.

Representatives of the Cuban exile organization known as UNIDAD CUBANA have contacted this office and have advised that approximately 50-100 of its members will counter demonstrate during the course of the previously listed rally.

Recipients are reminded that on May 2, 1998, the listed organizations held a symposium at 7701 SW 76 Avenue, Miami, Florida. RAFAEL CANCEL MIRANDA, another member of the MACHETEROS organization, was the guest speaker at that event.

Though this latest rally was held in the City of Miami Police Department jurisdiction, there appears to be a renewed interest in support of Puerto Rican nationalist causes by South Florida leftist or liberal organizations. Such events coincide with renewed activities by the MACHETEROS organization.  Silent throughout most of the 1990's, the MACHETEROS claimed responsibility for an explosion which occurred on March 31, 1998, at a sueraqueduct project in Arecibo, Puerto Rico.  Tape recorded statements from fugitive FILIBERTO OJEDA, one of the organization leaders, have revealed that the organization will renew its terrorist activities in the near future in furtherance of their nationalist objectives.

The CIS will monitor this event and will disseminate additional information as it becomes available.
