APRIL-MAY 1998C.I.B. UPDATE 98-33 - May 25, 1998
CANF And Cuban Unity Demonstrated For the Repatriation of Cubans From the Bahamas. The Cuban exile organization known as the CUBAN AMERICAN NATIONAL FOUNDATION (CANF) and UNIDAD CUBANA (CUBAN UNITY), recently conducted several demonstrations at the Bahamian Consulate office Freedom Tower. The demonstrations were in response to what leaders of those organizations perceive as inappropriate treatment of Cuban refugees who have been repatriated to Cuba from the Bahamas.
Additionally the Bahamian Consulate Office received at least one death threat and a bomb threat. Furthermore, a CANF vessel traveled through the cruise ship access channel at the Port of Miami while carrying large signs to exhort tourists to boycott tourism to the Bahamas.
Last month, a law enforcement official from the Bahamas Royal Police contacted this office and confirmed that a total of 60 Cuban exiles who resided at the Carmichael Center in Nassau, Bahamas, was repatriated to Cuba on May 26, 1998.
Such forced repatriation will more than likely result in additional demonstrations to be conducted y Cuban organizations.
To date, the demonstrations have been carried out within the jurisdiction of the City of Miami Police Department. However, unconfirmed information received from the organizations revealed the groups may possibly attempt to block the entrances to the Port of Miami or Miami International Airport.
The Criminal Intelligence Bureau will remain in contact with elements from the listed organizations and will disseminate additional information as it be comes available.
