Exile Activities

Update # 99-55
December 9, 1999

Andres Gomez, the leader of the Antonio Maceo Brigade, a liberal Cuban exile organization, protested at the office of Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen.

The protest stemmed at the lack of response from the U.S. Government to return Elian Gonzalez to his father in Cuba.

The Criminal Intelligence Bureau monitored these activities, and will disseminate any updated information.

December 9, 1999

President Bill Clinton visited South Florida on December 11, 1999, and attended various functions in Miami-Dade County, the City of Coral Gables, and the City of Pinecrest.

As a result of the crisis between the United States and Cuba over the custody of Elian Gonzalez and the drowning deaths of several Cuban rafters, Cuban exile organizations protested at the sites visited by President Clinton.

The Criminal Intelligence Bureau and the U.S. Secret Service monitored these activities.

On December 3, 1999, a public wake for seven Cuban rafters who drowned in the Florida Straits took place at the National Funeral Home.
